Adjust timeout for website monitors
If your website monitor frequently reports “down” due to a timeout—even when your site is actually working—your site may just be slow to respond. Adjusting the timeout gives you control over how patient the monitor should be before triggering an alert.
Why change the timeout?
- Reduce false alarms: Slow responses won’t cause unnecessary “down” alerts.
- Tailor sensitivity: Choose timeout that fits your site’s typical response times.
- Improve accuracy: Prevent alert fatigue by matching timeouts to real-world performance.
How to change timeout settings
- Navigate to Monitors from the sidebar menu.
- Find the website monitor in your list and click the three-dot menu (⋮) next to it.
- Select Configure.
- Open the Settings tab and scroll to the Advanced section.
- Update the Timeout setting (in seconds)—default is 30; you can increase it up to 60 seconds.
- Click Save to apply the change.
Recommended timeouts
Site Type | Suggested Timeout |
---|---|
Fast, high-performance websites | 5–15 seconds |
Typical average-response sites | 30 seconds |
Slow or heavy-response sites | 45–60 seconds |
Plan your timeout based on your site’s performance—monitoring consistency improves when you allow for occasional delays.
